My thoughts about this series? Plot-wise, it seemed to have borrowed bits of the plot from the 2005 Constantine movie which starred Keanu Reeves:
- factions within Heaven/Hell are impatient for Judgement Day, and are taking things into their own hand to hasten it
- the archangel Gabriel as a villain
Some leaps of logic in the 'reinvented' Devil Slayer story:
- If all the old devil slayers and their mentors (or magi) are dead, who will train this new hero?
- Unlike other heroes in devil-slaying films (e.g. Buffy or Supernatural) who have supporting infrastructure like hidden arms caches, hideouts, hunters' network, etc., this new hero has almost nothing. He's treated as a murdering deserter by the US Army and has limited weapons and no training.
- How did he know so much about the other devils & demons in other parts of the world? Not from Google, I hope. :-)
Seems that the creators didn't put too much thought into their mini-series.

umm nobody trains him because unfortunately the last magi died before he got the chance
he has no demon slaying training but is on his third tour of duty in the marines so he knows how to kill
and lastly he doesn't know anything about demons, what he does no was told to him by issac (the last magi) and his assistant before their deaths and by issac's hard drive that he gave to him befoe his death
sounds like you didnt do your homework
Well, all I'm pointing out is that there's an incredible leap of logic: since when does US Marines training teach anything about wielding a sword, much less slaying demons with a sword? Also, the last magi's hard drive was almost too convenient a device to fill in the gaps in the plot. Even the 2 Winchester brothers in SUPERNATURAL had some form of training by way of their dad, plus help from other hunters like Bob. Imagine how viewers would have reacted if the father had just left them his diary and some weapons...
